How Much Does a Mobile Mechanic Cost vs. a Shop?

Your car needs a brake job and you've got two numbers on your desk: one from the shop up the road and one from a mobile mechanic who came to your driveway. The shop's line-item quote looks cheaper. It usually isn't, and once you walk through what's actually on each invoice, the decision almost always changes.

I get the "how are you cheaper than the shop?" question two or three times a week in Williamsburg, Henrico, and Virginia Beach driveways. The short answer is that a shop's hourly rate has to cover a building, a lobby, a parts counter, and four lifts whether they're full or empty. A service van carries the same tools without the overhead, and most of the time that gap ends up in your pocket. Sometimes it doesn't — and I'll tell you when.

What you're actually comparing

Two numbers show up on every auto repair quote: parts and labor. Parts are parts. A brake rotor costs roughly what a brake rotor costs whether a shop or a mobile mechanic installs it, and any honest quote should show you the part and the price separately.

Labor is where shops and mobile mechanics diverge. A shop will tell you their rate is $130–$180 per hour as of 2026 in the Hampton Roads corridor. A mobile rate is usually $95–$130 per hour. That gap — thirty or forty dollars an hour — is the overhead difference. On a two-hour brake job, that's sixty to eighty dollars off your total without touching the parts.

There's no magic to it. I don't pay rent on a bay. I don't pay a service advisor to walk you through your estimate. The van and the tools are the same.

The shop's overhead gets baked in somewhere

What a lot of drivers don't realize is that a shop's estimate usually carries a few line items that aren't labor and aren't parts: shop supplies, environmental fees, a "diagnostic charge" that hasn't actually been earned yet. Those fees are how a shop pays for the waiting room coffee and the lift that sat empty yesterday. They're not illegitimate, but they're real money and they add up fast.

On a recent alternator job in Yorktown, the customer showed me the shop quote next to mine. The parts were within ten dollars. The shop's labor hour was forty dollars higher than mine. Then there was a $45 "shop fee" at the bottom. The total gap was about $160 on a $550 job — roughly thirty percent. None of it was upsold parts or unnecessary work. It was overhead.

What a mobile visit looks like on the invoice

When I pull into a driveway in Richmond or Chesterfield, the invoice has three things on it: parts (at cost or near it), labor at my hourly rate, and a trip charge if you're outside the core service area. That's usually it.

A trip charge matters to be honest about. For most of the Williamsburg–Newport News–Hampton area, there's no separate trip charge. For a longer run out to Norfolk or the edge of Chesterfield, it's usually $25–$50 as of 2026. That's not a profit center — it's gas and drive time.

Real price ranges for the jobs we see most

These are 2026 ranges for common jobs on common vehicles — sedan, SUV, half-ton pickup, nothing exotic. Shop numbers reflect the range I see on Hampton Roads estimates. Mobile numbers are what I typically bill in a driveway.

  • Diagnostic scan with live data. Shop: $140–$200. Mobile: $120–$180. Usually a wash.
  • Oil change (full synthetic). Shop: $85–$130. Mobile: $80–$120. Close, because parts are most of the cost.
  • Front brake pads and rotors. Shop: $420–$650. Mobile: $340–$520. The labor gap shows up clearly on a two-hour job. (If you're still deciding whether you need the work, our post on which brake noises are urgent is the one to read first.)
  • Starter replacement (most sedans). Shop: $480–$720. Mobile: $380–$580.
  • Alternator replacement. Shop: $520–$780. Mobile: $420–$620.
  • Battery replacement with a proper charging-system check. Shop: $220–$320. Mobile: $180–$260.
  • Serpentine belt (the one long belt that drives the alternator, AC, and power steering pump). Shop: $180–$260. Mobile: $140–$210.

Those ranges assume nothing weird has seized and that the part is a quality aftermarket or OE equivalent — not the cheapest option on the parts counter shelf. If a quote is wildly below these ranges, ask what's in the parts line. We only recommend what your vehicle actually needs, and the same should be true of what's going into it.

When a shop is still the right call

Mobile isn't always the right answer. A few jobs belong in a shop, and I'll say so up front:

  • Tire mounting and balancing. A shop has the balancer and the tire machine. I don't.
  • Major transmission or engine work. A rebuild or a reseal needs a lift and a controlled environment, not a driveway in July.
  • Alignment. Needs a rack. Always a shop job.
  • Virginia state inspections. By state law, these happen at a licensed inspection station.

If the job is one of those, I'll tell you and point you at a shop I trust. The honest quote sometimes is "not me."

How we quote before we drive out

Before a van ever pulls into your driveway, you get a written range with the parts and labor separated. No "we'll see when we get there." If the diagnosis is already clean — you know it's a battery, or the shop told you it's a starter and you want a second opinion on price — the quote is usually within ten percent of the final invoice.

The short version: you should never be surprised by the number on the invoice. If you are, somebody didn't do their job on the quote.

One more thing about price

The cheapest quote isn't always the honest one. A shop that quotes $300 for a brake job your car didn't need isn't saving you money — they're selling you work. A mobile mechanic who undercuts every quote in town is probably skipping something. Price matters, but it's the second thing to look at. The first is whether the person on the other end of the phone can explain what's wrong with your car in a way you can repeat to your spouse at dinner.
